The medical coding professional plays a crucial role in healthcare delivery. Medical records containing vast
amounts of information must be converted into a set of classifications or codes that are recognized by health
insurance companies. Coders must make this conversion before the patient can be billed.

Prior to taking this course, it is strongly recommended that you take a medical terminology
course or complete several exercises in the medical terminology book, The Language of Medicine.
Pre-class Orientation
You will receive information about a pre-class orientation to online learning prior to the class start date.
Work Environment
A registered certified coding associate is one of the few healthcare positions that is not involved in direct
patient care. They work behind the scenes in hospitals, physician offices, nursing care facilities, outpatient
centers and home healthcare offices. Government agencies, such as the federal government also employ certified
coding associates.
Coding associates work in pleasant and comfortable offices and generally work a 40-hour week, with some
overtime. In 24-hour facilities, coding associates may work day, evening and night shifts. Part-time work
is also available.
