Tutors Linked to Classes (TLC)
Program

The Tutors Linked to Classes (TLC) program is for interested students who have already taken a class and have received a grade of ‘B’ or higher. Upon the instructor's recommendation, the student becomes a tutor for that particular class. Tutors attend class and hold organized study groups and free study sessions 3-4 times a week (outside of regular class time.) TLC tutors are requested by instructors.

What makes the TLC program different

TLC provides faculty members with an opportunity to personally select a tutor to assist them in their classes, and provide their students immediate access to a peer mentor and group study session leader.

TLC builds upon the success of Century College’s tutoring programs, and brings these important services to our busy students.

The role of faculty members

This is a faculty-driven initiative, and its success is largely dependent upon faculty comfort, interests, and vision.

Faculty are requested to:

  1. Choose the student tutor. (If an instructor needs help, the TLC Coordinators will assist in finding a student from a pool of current on-campus tutors.)
  2. Meet bi-weekly or monthly with the tutor activities.
  3. Meet with TLC supervisors once during the semester and once at the end.
  4. Provide student grade reports.

Tutors' classroom responsibilities

Tutors will attend all or many class sessions and model effective learning behaviors. Instructors may offer tutors the opportunity to:

  • work with students in small groups,
  • demonstrate or illustrate key concepts in front of the class at large,
  • or assist with the development of additional study material.

Classroom tutors do not fulfill any of the functions of an instructor (teaching, evaluation, grading, curriculum preparation); instead, they provide additional supplemental academic support to the instructor’s students.

Tutors' responsiblities outside the classroom

Part of classroom tutors’ schedules are dedicated to convening and facilitating 1 to 2-hour study groups for the specific course to which they are linked. Additionally, classroom tutors are expected to be available in an academic support lab for one-on-one support.

Tutor selection process

TLC Coordinators contact students to initiate the hiring process. Candidates complete a Student Employment Packet at the Office of Financial Aid, and within 1-3 weeks, an allocation letter will be sent to each student and the TLC Coordinators. Students are then eligible to begin tutoring.

Training

Not only will classroom tutors have access to all of the CRLA-certified training resources that peer tutors enjoy, they will also receive 5-10 hours per semester of position-specific training, boosting their skills in the areas of small group facilitation, relationship building, conflict management, diversity awareness and boundary-setting.
