Goal Statement
This Intramural Sports Handbook provides you with specific guidelines and information to ensure a fair, safe and effective intramural program.
Health and Safety
Participation in the Intramural program is completely voluntary. The Intramural Sports Program and Century College does not provide you with health insurance. It is strongly recommended that you have appropriate health insurance coverage for any injury that may occur when participating in intramural programs.
You must assume the responsibility for your own harm or injuries incurred while involved in the Intramural Program. The Intramural Program will provide initial emergency care such as provision of bandages, ice or immobilization if you are injured during a contest. The Intramural Program will not provide services to prepare or maintain your readiness to participate, such as taping ankles.
If you suffer a laceration or wound where oozing or bleeding occurs, the competition will be stopped at the earliest possible time and you will be required to leave the playing area. You will not be allowed to return to competition until the wound has been covered and the oozing or bleeding has stopped. Additionally, any participant with blood or other bodily fluids on their clothing will not be allowed to continue participation until the stained clothing has been removed and replaced.
Participation in athletic activities may cause injury and exposure to blood borne pathogens. Blood borne pathogens are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause diseases in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The Intramural Program will make every effort to minimize exposure to employees and participants. Because the Intramural staff is trained and certified to respond to emergency and blood exposure situations, we ask that they be contacted immediately to respond to any injury.
Century College, the Intramural Department and its staff are not held responsible for any injuries or damage to personal property incurred while participating or as a spectator in the Intramural Program. The Intramural Staff should be notified immediately of all injuries sustained during Intramural competition.
The Intramural Sports staff takes precautions to make Intramural activities as safe as possible for you. These precautions include rule modifications; official’s training, and playing site inspection. In order to ensure safety, the Intramural Office reserves the right to restrict individuals from participating with improper footwear or personal property such as jewelry, glasses, hats or any other item deemed dangerous.
Alcohol and Drugs
Alcohol and drug use is prohibited for both players and officials at all Intramural activities. Alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs are not permitted in any Intramural area. If alcohol, drugs or other paraphernalia are found, it will be confiscated immediately and appropriate action will be taken.
Equipment
Intramural sports equipment may be checked out with a Century College I.D. for Intramural play or personal use from the “Connection” at W1520. Those using Intramural equipment will be held accountable for any damage not considered to be normal wear and tear.
When equipment is lost or damaged, you are responsible for any charges. Abuse of equipment is cause for ejection from a game as well as further disciplinary action.
Personal athletic equipment may be used for Intramural play as long as it conforms to Intramural rules. Judgments on such equipment by Intramural officials and/or supervisors shall be final.
Section II – How to Register/ Participate
Schedule of Events
A schedule of events, entry deadlines and the starting dates are published as soon as possible. Additional activities and information are announced periodically on the bulletin board, flyers and the Intramural website. All activities are subject to change. An Intramural Event Schedule can be found on Intramural bulletin boards or online at www.century.edu.
How to Enter
You must complete and return a registration form and waiver to the Intramural Office at W2550 or the Connection at W1520.Forms are not needed for open recreation times. Forms are available at the Connection, on Intramural bulletin boards and online at www.century.edu. Any applicable registration fees must accompany the registration form. A team will not be considered registered for a sport if they have not completed the registration procedures.
Free Agents
Individuals seeking to play on teams are encouraged to complete the free agent form. The Intramural staff will make free agent information available to teams and/or attempt to place that individual with a team
Registration Deadlines
Registration deadlines are established to allow enough time to schedule the event. These deadlines will be strictly adhered to. If the deadline has passed for an event in which you are interested, please contact Intramural Director.
Section III - Eligibility
Eligibility to Participate
The Intramural Program is open to all students, faculty and staff at Century College. Students must carry at least one credit to be eligible to participate. Students will retain eligibility status until they withdraw, graduate, or fail to comply with eligibility rules or other guidelines. Each participant must provide a current Century College ID before participating in any event.
You may only play for one team in any given sport or contest. You may not switch to another team after having played as a member of another team for that particular sport.
The team captain is responsible for making sure all members of his/her team understands all Intramural policies and procedures and has accurately completed and signed all necessary paperwork for participation.
Failure to satisfactorily complete this information will preclude you from participating and will result in team disqualification or forfeit.
Activities
The Intramural Program aims to provide you with an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports and recreational activities. Emphasis is placed on Intramural college campus team and individual activities.
There are no restrictions as to the number of sports, leagues, tournaments and events in which you may participate. However, you may participate for only ONE team per activity.
Assumed Name
If you participate under an assumed name or use someone else’s Century College ID, you will be ineligible for all Intramural activities for the remainder of the school year. A team guilty of using such a player will forfeit all contests in which the ineligible player participated and may be dropped from the league for the remainder of the season.
Identification Cards
You are required to present a valid Century College ID card prior to participating in any intramural event. Failure to comply will ban you from participation.
Section IV - Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship
The Intramural program’s goal is participant recreation and enjoyment. It is expected that you will conduct yourself in a manner that will not impair the enjoyment of other participants. It is the responsibility of each participant to do everything possible to maintain a friendly and fun intramural atmosphere. All actions and comments regardless if directed at officials, opponents, team mates or spectators should be constructive and conducive to fulfilling this goal.
Sportsmanship in every event is an essential component of the Intramural Department. The Intramural Program insists on good sportsmanship. To foster a positive atmosphere and attitude for recreation and competition, and encourage teams and individuals to take responsibility for their actions and comments, Intramural Staff will review each contest to determine whether actions that are detrimental to the goal of the program were exhibited.
Actions that are dangerous and/or conduct that is detrimental to the goal of the Intramural program will not be tolerated. Such actions and comments may result in suspension from further participation in Intramural programming.
Following are examples of un-sportsmanlike behavior and conduct that is detrimental to the Intramural program:
- Profanity, insulting or vulgar language or gestures, incidental or otherwise.
- Threatening comments or verbal abuse of another participant, Intramural staff or spectator before, during or after an intramural activity.
- Participation in a game for which you are not eligible.
- Arguing or fighting with the game official or Intramural staff.
- Actions that may lead to a fight.
- Attempts to influence the decision of an official or Intramural staff.
- Intentionally striking, pushing, tripping, or otherwise physically assaulting another player, spectator, official or staff member.
- Throwing objects.
- Participating under false name.
- Failure to cooperate with Intramural staff.
- Mistreatment of college facilities, equipment, or supplies.
Ejections
Any participant involved with poor sportsmanlike behavior will be ejected from the game or event and suspended from the next game. A participant’s second eviction will prohibit participation in that event or any other event for the remainder of the semester and/or year. To ensure proper conduct before, during and after a game, all officials and Intramural Department personnel have the authority to warn, penalize, and suspend players and teams displaying unsportsmanlike conduct. These decisions are final.
You will be expected to adhere to the Century College’s Code of Conduct as outlined on the Century College Web site under the Student Handbook section. You may also obtain a free copy of the handbook in the Counseling Center. Failure to adhere to the Code of Conduct will prohibit you from participation in that event or other events for the remainder of the semester and/or year.
Forfeits
As a courtesy to other participants and the Intramural Department, teams and individuals are encouraged to arrive early to all Intramural activities. If the minimum number of eligible players doesn’t arrive and begin play at the scheduled game time, it is recorded as a forfeit. A team must start with the minimum number of eligible players as stated in the rules for the sport or a forfeit is declared. A forfeit makes a team ineligible for any playoff competition. If both teams do not have the minimum number of eligible participants to start or finish a game, both teams receive a forfeit.
Intramural Staff may also assess a forfeit for player and/or spectator misconduct.
Teams must show up with at least the minimum number of eligible players to reserve their spot in the league. A team forfeiting their first scheduled game in the season will be removed from their league without a refund, if applicable. A team forfeiting its second contest will be removed from further competition in that activity.
Any individual or team determined to be under the influence of or in possession of alcohol or drugs, will forfeit that game and become subject to suspension rules.
Participants and team captains are responsible for establishing the eligibility of the players on their roster.
Protests
Protest assure justice to an individual or team and will be decided on the basis of fairness to the individuals or teams concerned and the best interests of the Intramural competition in the sport involved. The final decision will be by the Intramural Director.
Rule Interpretation
Rule interpretation protest must be made to the official or a member of the Intramural Department at the time of the incident and before the play continues. Once play resumes, no protest on past play is acceptable.
Player Eligibility
Any team or individual protesting the eligibility of a player should have sufficient reason to believe that the player is ineligible. To ensure honest sport competition, protests of alleged eligibility violations must be made to the official or a member of the Intramural Department. An individual or team may protest the eligibility of an opponent to the official at any time before the game is over. Should the player be found to ineligible, all appropriate games must forfeit.
Scheduling
The need may arise to reschedule an Intramural activity. Postponements due to inclement weather, field conditions, facility use, unforeseen situations, or extenuating circumstances will be made by the Intramural Department. Whenever possible, postponed games and activities will be rescheduled. If an event is rescheduled, every effort will be made to notify registered participants in a timely fashion. Signs will be posted on the Intramural Bulletin Board, The Connection and by the gymnasium. If an activity is canceled and cannot be rescheduled, money will be refunded, if applicable.
Awards
Awards will be presented for various Intramural activities and events. Check the particular activity for award offerings.
A participant must be on the winning team’s original roster and have participated in at least two regular season games to be eligible to receive an award.
