Program description
Chemistry is a fascinating field of science. Often referred to as the "central science", chemistry is at the heart of many other sciences, such as biology, physics, geology, material science, and environmental science. The knowledge and skills you learn by taking a course in chemistry will help you make informed decisions on issues that affect our world.
You will not only learn about the structure of atoms and molecules, the states of matter, and the principles of chemical reactivity, you will also learn how scientists think. You will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and utilize the equipment and technology used by chemists.
All courses in chemistry satisfy Goal 3 of the Minnesota State Transfer Curriculum.
The Concepts in Chemistry course (Chem 1020) is for students who have never had a high school chemistry course or have not taken one in the past three years. The Century College nursing program also requires this course. The class is also required by the Century College Nursing program.
The Principle of Chemistry I and II sequence (Chem 1041 and 1042), is needed if you want to pursue a four-year degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, nursing, engineering, and kinesiology. It is also required by physical therapy programs and by pharmacy, medical, dental, and veterinary schools.
Program points of pride
We will move into a brand new science and library building in the fall of 2008.
Student points of pride
Students who have taken chemistry at Century are regularly accepted into nursing and engineering programs as well as medical and pharmacy schools.
For each of the past two years, a Century chemistry student has been accepted to the nationally competitive Lando/NSF Chemistry Summer Research Program at the University of Minnesota
Flexible learning options
Century offers evening courses in Chem 1020 and Chem 1041. Beginning Spring 2008, Century will offer an online Chem 1020 course.
