Program description
The English Department at Century College offers you the same English courses as any four-year college or university during your first two years. There are, however, two important differences:
- Century is less expensive.
- You won't be taught by a teaching assistant.
All Century English instructors have a minimum of a Master's Degree and many years of college teaching experience.
Here you'll have 25 different literature courses to choose from. In addition to the basic first-year English composition courses, we also offer courses in technical writing, advanced composition, and creative writing. Literature courses range from the general - such as American and British Literature - to the specific, such as Minnesota Writers.
Program points of pride
- Phantasmagoria, our literary journal
- Our wide range of literature course offerings
- Our Writing Center
- Julie Daniels is developing a program in technical writing.
- Carl Gerriets, Mary Fernandez, and Bob Hathaway were recently recognized by Phi Theta Kappa for their outstanding teaching.
Writing with computers
At Century College, students have the opportunity to use technology to learn about and improve their writing. Some English courses are held in computer classrooms, one of which is specially designed to facilitate writing workshops, collaboration, and visual presentation of writing. In addition, an increasing number of English courses are web-enhanced or offered totally online.
The Writing Center also provides computers specifically reserved for students who are working on writing projects. Students can save their writing on disk or CD.
