Humanities

Program description

The humanities are the study of the creative contributions made by individuals from many cultures throughout history. In essence, the humanities are a response to the wonder of life. This is particularly important in a world that has become a global village…a world with hovering threats and violence, a world of rapid technological change and growing environmental hazards, and a world in which cynics wonder about the value of living.

The primary concern of humanities is to persuade you to stay inspired and strengthen your resolve to be an enlightened citizen of the world.

The Century College Humanities Program encompasses a spectrum of courses that focus on the creative legacy of humankind -- referred to collectively as ‘the humanities'. This includes the fields of literature, music, dance, visual art, theatre, media, film, philosophy, mythology and religion. The scope of each area is broad, stretching from pre-historic times to the frontiers of cyberspace. In each course, you'll have the opportunity to discuss and analyze representative creative works from both a historical and a cultural context.

Course offerings include:

  • Introduction to the Humanities: Europe and the U.S.
  • Introduction to the Humanities: A World View
  • Culture and Civilization of Spanish Speaking Peoples
  • Culture and Civilization of French Speaking Peoples
  • The Art of Film
  • International Film
  • American Film
