Outreach and support programs
The federal TRiO programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Three programs were created as part of the War on Poverty in 1966, thus the TRiO name.
TRiO now includes six outreach and support programs to assist low-income, first-generation college students. The programs also serve students with disabilities to help them successfully progress from middle school to the post-baccalaureate level.
