What is the Basic Rider Course?

Is there a prerequisite for this course?

Prior to starting the in-person session, the e-course assessment must be completed.  More information about accessing and completing the e-course is provided during registration.

Do you need a motorcycle permit prior to taking this course?

Yes, if obtaining a permit is your goal upon completing this course. If you’re 18 or older, have a valid Minnesota driver’s license, and currently hold a motorcycle instruction permit, the riding skills test for motorcycle endorsement will be waived upon successfully completing the Basic Rider Course. Participants under 18 must take the BRC before obtaining their permit and must have a parent/guardian signature to participate.

Are motorcycles provided?

CECT is hiring Motorcycle Training Instructors!

If you’re an experienced motorcycle rider and want to make additional income, consider becoming a motorcycle training instructor with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Motorcycle Safety Center!

Motorcycle Instructors employed by the MN Motorcycle Safety Center, also referred to as RiderCoaches, earn $36 per hour and have the opportunity to share their passion for motorcycling with diverse Minnesota communities.

RiderCoach candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Be experienced motorcyclists who currently ride a street legal motorcycle and posses a valid motorcycle endorsement.
  • Be committed to safe riding practices in all aspects of motorcycling.
  • Successfully complete a 72-hour RiderCoach Preparation Course and 40-50 hours of pre-course work.
