“Education is important because you hold yourself to a higher standard, and you envision a higher, better version of yourself. Education should be important to everyone.”

Siem Medhane, a second-year student at Century, chose the College because of its proximity to his home and the recommendations of his friends, who transferred to four-year universities after graduating from Century.

A Warm and Welcoming College Environment

Century College’s friendly and welcoming environment made the transition from high school easier for Siem, who started with General Education courses before eventually switching to Computer Science, Siem was inspired by his family members, who are Computer Science graduates and successful in their careers.

As a first-generation student, Siem feels the pressure to be a good role model for his younger siblings and his parents. He takes this responsibility seriously and is committed to getting a good education.

Originally from Eritrea, he is fluent in both English and Tigrinya, and Siem emigrated to the US at a very young age. He grew up playing soccer and now coaches multiple youth groups, when he’s not working hard in his chosen field of study.

He has also gained valuable work experience in various fields, from landscaping to guest advocating, and now plans on operating his own wholesaling LLC business,

In his free time, he enjoys meeting and relaxing with friends at the West Campus Connection, and studying. He also enjoys the College’s numerous Student Life and Multicultural Center activities, such as cultural and educational festivals and events.

Future Plans

After completing his Century College degree, Siem plans to transfer to the University of Minnesota or Metro State University and pursue his MIS degree. He is looking forward to his future, and is currently exploring opportunities for a summer internship to further his career prospects.

Siem praises the faculty of Century College, who were approachable, helpful, and supportive. “I enjoyed working with Economics Professor Marc Fournier and Computer Science Professor Matthew Nyamagwa,” Siem notes.

“I wholeheartedly recommend Century College to anyone seeking a high-quality education in a welcoming and supportive environment,” he says. “And Century’s small class sizes are also very good,”
