The theme for Banned Books Week 2024 is “Freed Between the Lines.”

As highlighted by the American Library Association, Banned Books Week is a celebration of the freedom to read and an illumination of both contemporary and historical efforts to censor books within libraries and schools. For four decades, this annual event has united the entire literary community—including librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, educators, and readers of all kinds—in a collective stand for the freedom to explore and express ideas, even those deemed unconventional or controversial. The spotlighted books during Banned Books Week have all faced challenges or attempts at removal from libraries and schools. By showcasing these censorship efforts nationwide, Banned Books Week underscores the detrimental impact of restricting access to literature.
