September 13, 2024Mahmoud Alhihi’s journey into the realm of artificial intelligence/computer science began in 2018, sparked by his father, back in Kuwait, who ignited his passion for the field. Mahmoud is a meticulous planner by nature, characterized by his strategic mindset, forward-thinking approach, and an unwavering quest for self-improvement and bettering his surroundings.
His dedication to serving others was evident even during high school when he proactively reached out to Century College and the University of Minnesota to gather information for his future applications, demonstrating his foresight and commitment to his academic and professional aspirations.
A Proud Member of a Century College Family
Mahmoud hails from a family with strong ties to Century College. His cousin had previously graduated from Century before transferring to the University of Minnesota, paving a path that Mahmoud himself would follow. He also credits his father and his family (including his uncle, currently in Canada) with guiding him and instilling the importance of life-long learning and goal-setting in his life planning. His uncle has encouraged him to pursue opportunities in medical technology and AI.
Mahmoud commenced his academic journey at Century College in the fall of 2022. Although his first semester presented a period of adjustment and occasional boredom due to his unfamiliarity with the college environment, his active participation in various campus programs soon transformed his experience.
A Deep Commitment to Community Service
“Century College boasts the best professors,” Mahmoud often remarks. His engagement with the faculty, coupled with his roles as a Tech Assistant in numerous classes, a greeter at the Student Support Center, and a Peer Mentor, significantly enriched his college experience. It was through these roles that he discovered a profound enjoyment in his academic life at Century.
Despite a rigorous course load—undertaking 21 credits in his final semester—Mahmoud excelled academically, earning honors from Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). Balancing his studies with volunteer work and physical fitness, he also made time to socialize with friends on weekends. His commitment to community service extended beyond the campus; he volunteered at the Minnesota Literacy Center, assisting immigrants and seniors in improving their computer skills.
Advice for New Century College Students
Mahmoud offers this advice for incoming students: “Always check ‘Rate My Professor’ and use it as a guide when choosing classes. And don’t hesitate to approach your professors—they are the best. Also, immerse yourself in the Century Community—join a club, get involved, make a difference!”
Ambitious Future Plans
Having earned his Associate’s Degree in Computer Science with a Transfer Pathway, Mahmoud Alhihi is now embarking on the next chapter of his academic journey at the University of Minnesota this fall, where he will pursue his Bachelor’s degree in Science and Engineering.
His long-term aspirations include obtaining his Master’s degree. He envisions a professional career in Minnesota, followed by relocating to another major metropolitan area to expand his horizons.
Always keen to seize new opportunities, Mahmoud has forged valuable connections at various conferences, including a recent AI conference in Minneapolis.
His Century College journey stands as a testament to his resilience, ambition, and unwavering commitment to both personal growth and community betterment.
