February 27, 2020Century College Biology faculty member Rahul Kane has been awarded the prestigious and highly competitive $10,000 Innovation grant through the office of Educational Innovations at the Minnesota State system office. As a recipient of an innovation funding award, he will be recognized at this year’s Shark Tank Open event on Thursday, March 26.
Additionally, Kane’s grant application for the $25,000 Shark Tank Innovation funding was also selected to move to the Shark Tank Open, where he will be pitching his next innovative idea.
In 2018, Kane won the $25,000 Shark Tank Innovation funding for his project “Developing 2D and 3D Virtual Activity Based Learning Approaches Using OER Integration with an Online Adaptive Learning Pedagogy-Based Platform”.
This year he is proposing “Creating an Open Source High Quality Online Course Design Template Shell and Guide.” His idea uses multiple open source technologies to create an eLearning portal that would allow searching and use of high-quality material to create online courses that include videos, animation, and multiple forms of assessment.
Kane is passionate about creating low cost, rigorous online courses that increase accessibility and equity in education. An expert in teaching online science courses, he received the 2018 National Outstanding e-Learning Faculty of the Year award, as well as the National Distinguished Educator of the Year award from the American Association of Community Colleges Instructional Technology Council.
He has given several talks on online Science education at national level conferences, including the national Human Anatomy and Physiology Society Annual conference and the League of Innovations in Community College conference.
