Century College Awarded Arts Learning Grant

The Minnesota State Arts Board recently awarded Century College with a one-year grant to create a program for 60 youth from East African immigrant communities.  The goal of the program is to provide students with “inspiring learning experiences in photographic expression and enriching exposure to post-secondary education in the visual arts.”

Century College’s Art Department will run the program, in collaboration with Mohamud Mumin, Somali photographer and visual storyteller, and Melissa Borman, Century Art faculty, who will guide students in projects  which explore photography as a means of visual expression.  Mr. Mumin and Ms. Borman will teach on-site at two STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focused Twin Cities high schools, including Heritage Academy of Science and Technology (Minneapolis), Ubah Medical Academy (Hopkins), and Skyline Tower/CommonBond Community (St. Paul).

Students will work individually and collaboratively toward exhibition of their work in the community and at Century College.  They will also take field trips to the Century College Art Department, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and other venues.
