The Century College Speaker Series kicks off on Thursday, February 16, with author readings and a community discussion surrounding the anthology, “A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota”,  at 7 pm in the East Campus, Lincoln Mall. The event will feature Sun Yung Shin, editor of the book, as well as several distinguished contributing writers, including:

  • Shannon Gibney, educator, activist, and author of See No Color, a young adult novel.
  • IBé, spoken-word poet and recipient of a 2010 Midwestern Voices Award, a 2009 Urban Griots’ Cultural Award, a 2005 Verve Grant for spoken word poets, and a 2004 Minnesota Academy Award nominee for Best Spoken Word.
  • David Mura, memoirist, author of  Turning Japanese, a Josephine Miles Book Award/ Oakland PEN winner and a New York Times Notable Book, and Where the Body Meets Memory.
  • Diane Wilson, author of  Spirit Car: Journey to a Dakota Past, the 2012 One Minneapolis One Read selection, and a nonfiction book, Beloved Child: A Dakota Way of Life.
