About the Program

The Cosmetology program at Century College in White Bear Lake, Minnesota provides you with an affordable education to prepare you for an exciting career in the Cosmetology industry. A leader in Cosmetology education in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul area), the Century College Cosmetology degree and/or diploma will prepare you for your license in Cosmetology, and put you on a the path to earning a good wage in a career that you’ll love.

The Century College Cosmetology program offers you incredible value. You will save thousands of dollars by earning your Cosmetology degree and/or diploma at Century College compared to private, for-profit colleges or beauty schools.

While attending the Cosmetology program you will have unique opportunities to gain “real-world” experience while earning your education. The on-site Cosmetology Salon is open to the public, giving you the opportunity to work with a variety of clients. The Cosmetology program also provides you the chance to take part in industry competitions and gain leadership training via the SkillsUSA program.

  • Skin care, makeup and waxing

Nail Care Technician

The Nail Care Technician certificate at Century College is a short-term program that will prepare you for licensure as a Nail Care Technician. In the program, you will be instructed in nail care theory and practical application techniques including:

  • Shaping
  • Polishing
  • Massage of hands and feet
  • Application of gel polish artificial nails

The completion of the Cosmetology degree, diploma or Nail Care Technician certificate will prepare you for the State of Minnesota written exam and certification of skills as required by Minnesota cosmetology laws and rules for licensure.

Cosmetology - AAS 68 Credits

  • Demonstrate academic and skill proficiency at an entry level hair/nail technician and acquire sufficient amounts of knowledge to pass the state practical and written exams.
  • Demonstrate effective and appropriate communication with clients.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and skill as well as being able to analyze nail care, shampooing, conditioning, hair coloring, hair styling, permanent waving, chemical hair relaxing, facial treatments, applying makeup, and all areas of hair cutting based on clients’ needs and wants.
  • Demonstrate proper safety and sanitation, as well as safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste as governed by Minnesota law and rules.
  • Identify and interpret Minnesota cosmetology rules and laws as well as demonstrating ethical business practices in the salon including cash handling and reporting.

Cosmetology - Diploma 52 Credits

  • Demonstrate academic and skill proficiency at an entry level hair/nail technician and acquire sufficient amounts of knowledge to pass the state practical and written exams.
  • Demonstrate effective and appropriate communication with clients.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and skill as well as being able to analyze nail care, shampooing, conditioning, hair coloring, hair styling, permanent waving, chemical hair relaxing, facial treatments, applying makeup, and all areas of hair cutting based on clients’ needs and wants.
  • Demonstrate proper safety and sanitation, as well as safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste as governed by Minnesota law and rules.

Nail Care Technician - Certificate 16 Credits

  • Demonstrate academic and skill proficiency at an entry level nail technician and acquire sufficient amounts of knowledge to pass the state practical and written exams.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and skill in nail care including the care of hands and feet and the application of artificial nail enhancements.
  • Demonstrate effective and appropriate communication with clients.
  • Demonstrate proper safety and sanitation, as well as safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste as governed by Minnesota law and rules.

Additional Requirements

High School diploma or GED, State Licensing Exam, and Certification of Skills are required for licensure.
