About the Program

The Education program provides both the foundation for upper division coursework for those planning to become teachers, as well as opportunities to earn either a certificate or associates degree in Paraeducation. Our courses are interdisciplinary and will provide hands-on experience to help you gain the strategies and skills needed for the work of professional education.

The Paraeducator option is a pre-professional program providing an essential core of education courses and experiences. It prepares you for work as educational paraprofessionals. The curriculum provides specific training, general education and experience working with children or youth in educational settings. It will fulfill the education requirements for paraprofessionals as described in the Leave No Children Behind legislation (Title I schools.)

The Associate in Science in Education is a transfer-oriented program providing a comprehensive core of education courses and experiences. It prepares you to transfer into a four-year teacher education program (or to work as educational paraprofessionals.) The curriculum provides specific training, general education and experience working with children or youth in educational settings. If you are interested in transferring to a four-year program, it is recommended you check the specific transfer arrangements with the college of your choice and a Century College counselor or advisor. These discussions should take place early and often to ensure an appropriate program is planned for enrollment at Century College and at the four-year school.

Learning Outcomes

Education - AS 60 Credits

  • Demonstrate academic knowledge and practical skill in teaching students in grades K-5 in various areas of need in community schools.
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff and collaborate with mentoring teachers who supervise the volunteering experience.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply professional knowledge and classroom experience to new situations.
  • Identify and interpret ethical and social issues associated with the education field.
  • Demonstrate the ability to create professional electronic portfolios showcasing achievement in the field of education.

Additional Requirements

Structured, education-related practicums and field experience are important components of quality education programs. Students in the Education AS program are required to complete a minimum of 40 to 100 hours of approved practicums, field experiences, and internship experiences using the portfolio skills taught in EDUC 1020, recommended as a first semester course for all education majors; EDUC 1021, recommended at the end of the first year or the beginning of the second year. Be advised that transfer institutions and/or employers may also ask for this documentation.

NOTE: A MN Human Services Background Study may  be required for some education field experiences, however, the background study is not mandatory to start or complete the programs. Please contact Andrea Coffey with any questions or concerns.
